To fix bad blocks on a harddisk

Although the following process will not result in any data loss but
you may loose some of the files that are allocated on bad areas.
First of all make sure that you are having some bad blocks on your harddisk.
Bad blocks can be taken as equivalent to bad sectors.
The best way is to log in as root under failsafe session &
unmount the filesystem you want to check with the help of umount command.
umount /dev/hdxy
where x may be a,b,c,d,...
& y can be 1,2,3,4,....
To check what to write with umount you can run
fdisk -l
I am taking /dev/hda3 here.

After unmounting check the partition with the help of badblocks command
badblocks /dev/hda3 (say)
Now wait for a good time depending upon the size of the partition.
If you didn't see any numbers on the screen & just the prompt appears then
it means that the partition you have checked is free from any badblocks.

However if thsi doesn't happen & you see some number's after running badblocks then
ru nthe following command
e2fsck -p -c /dev/hda3
Note : you may also run e2fsck -c to save ur files that are on bad areas by
answering some questions asked by the e2fsck command.
Note: The above command will run on both ext2 & ext3 filesystems.
After running the above command run the following command to make sure that
the bad blocks have been marked
dumpe2fs -b /dev/hda3

Now repeat the whole process for rest of your partitions.

In case you want to check partitions like /var & /tmp then
you can do this with the help of booting your system from boot disk (I haven't tried this thing).
